LO 3: Exhibiting professional integrity and ethical leadership in professional practice
The entry contains a letter of professional promise from a long-time friend and colleague, Sha’terika Perkins. I spent significant time collaborating with Sha’terika in our undergraduate years at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as well as during our time together at Seattle University.
This entry demonstrates my professional integrity and ethical leadership in professional practice through my commitment to my core values, my ability to bring out the best in others around me, and my commitment to life-long learning and reflection, which are important components of ethical leadership and professional integrity.

This entry demonstrates my professional integrity and ethical leadership in professional practice through my commitment to my core values, my ability to bring out the best in others around me, and my commitment to life-long learning and reflection, which are important components of ethical leadership and professional integrity.
- Commitment to core values. I place high value upon my core values of joy and authenticity, as identified by the Core Values Assessment from the Center for Ethical Leadership (SDAD 571). I believe that professional integrity means acting genuinely from a place of care; to me, social justice and advocacy work is central to acting with care, along with collaborative leadership. I enjoyed the opportunity to learn from professionals who also operate from a place of integrity and ethical leadership through ethical interview assignments. I was encouraged by connecting with professionals in the field who model similar values and commitments. Sha’terika names the connection between my personal and professional values, and this congruency is really what I am all about.
- Bringing out the best in others. Much of what I have learned about leadership and integrity was modeled to me by past supervisors, professionals, and peers. I truly believe that the skills I have learned are as a direct result these interactions. Because of this, I seek to set high expectations of those I work with, whether explicitly or implicitly, in order to bring out the best in them. Through my work with students around multicultural competency and education equity, I strive to model integrity by practicing what I preach.
- Commitment to life-long learning and reflection. My commitment to professional integrity and ethical leadership must come alongside a commitment to life-long learning and reflection. I recognize that I have much more to learn about our profession, about power, privilege & oppression, and about myself as a political being. I embrace future possibilities in formal education and in informal settings to continue to deepen my learning while also discovering more about myself.
